"The aircraft in question was Master Trainer aircraft Mk III Number W-8816. This aircraft was 10 minutes into a dual circuits and landings night exercise when the crash occurred.

The time and date are recorded as 0340 hrs on the morning of 16th October 1942.

Our records state that the pilot lost control of the Master at 300 feet and it crashed onto the aerodrome at RAF Calveley in Cheshire.

An inquiry into the crash stated that an error of judgement on the part of the pilot was the cause of the accident and that there was no failure of the aircraft's instrumentation.

The crew details of Master No. W-8816 were as follows:-

1233516 Sgt G L Johnson - Pilot - Injured
1346507 Sgt H Clark - Student Pilot - Seriously Injured

Both of the above pilots were serving with Number 5 (Pilots) Advanced Flying Unit based at RAF Calveley." Click Here to see the log book entry
