A truly wonderful web-site, filled with interest and I may be able to identify some of the 'unknown' characters in your photos. I am, as an ex RGH man ['84 to 2000], interviewing/recording the 'old comrades'of 2RGH on behalf of the association and will show a few copies around. Also, and in case you're not aware, the RGH is now reduced to one TA [reserve] Sqn. And as part of The Royal Wessex Yeomanry are currently employed as armoured replacement crews for Challenger II, some having only just returned from the 'Desert'.[Not much change there]! These I will also be interviewing/recording for the records. Finaly, anyone who wants to keep up to date with the 'modern RGH' can check out their web-site; Info@RGH.org.uk All the best, Larry B.

I have just received war record copies for my late father, Charles Paul Elwell (passed away 17.11.2004), who served in IV QOH in Italy and Austria from late March '45 to early November '45, then transferred to Intelligence, largely in Trieste until demobilisation in July '46. Unfortunately the records, perhaps surprisingly, have no indication of the squadron he was attached to in his QOH time. Just wondering whether anyone there recalls him and perhaps has any photos, either group or personal, taken during that period. With many thanks.

Many thanks for sharing these photos. My interest in the 4th Hussars comes from my hobby of wargaming. This is the unit which forms the bulk of my "army" and I have read a fair amount in research. Indeed, it was during such research that I stumbled upon this website It is items such as this that remind people like myself that our hobby is based on real people who sacrificed a great deal during the period. My hobby may seem trivial, but I have learned quite a lot about the units and some of the soldiers through my research in its pursuit. Thankyou once again

My Grandfather was with the 4th QOH. His name was Frederick Fox. He was a tank driver and I remember him telling me of being in Cairo. My Grandfathers tank was destroyed and the only survivors were the commander who was badly injured and my Grandfather. This was behind enemy lines, and my Grandfather carried his commander back to safety. During this time my Grandfather had been reported missing in action presumed dead. I'm not sure how long the journey took but my Grandfather made it back to safety. Unfortunately, his commander was dead by the time they reached safety - he had died whilst being carried on my Grandfathers back. This must have been in or near Cairo as my Grandmother then received news that he was in hospital in Cairo with sand blindness. He then left the hospital of his own accord when his unit left, as he did not want to be left behind, and he went with them to Italy. If anyone remembers my Grandfather, or has even the smallest bit of information, please get in touch with me by email - I would be very grateful.

I've been trying to find out for years where he served so any help would be very much appreciated to what has been a very big jig-saw to piece together as he passed away when i was young in my teens. My name is Thomas Ingham and I am retired and living in Chiang Mai , Thailand . I found your site only recently and as a Hussar of the Line I'm sure my father would have approved. I am researching our family history and in particular my fathers service in the 4th Hussars 1924 -1930 in India , perhaps he served with Tpr. Keith Gentles, I would love to know. He was 543026 Tpr. John Ingham, Jack to his friends and family. I know only a little about his service as he rarely spoke of it; he was a Master of Horse in charge of some 400 cavalry mounts. He left the army in 1930 and was recalled to the colours early in 1939 he was demobbed in 1946 after serving in various regiments throughout the war. He served in North Africa, Palestine , Syria , Egypt , before going to Europe . He was awarded the 39-45 Star, Africa Star 8th Army , Italy Star , France & Germany Star, War and Defence Medals. I would like to hear from anyone who can give me any information regarding the regiments Indian service 1924-1930 perhaps you could put me in touch with Lieut-Colonel Gentles in British Colombia , it's possible we may have some common ground. I think the website is great!

I remember Sgt Curd very well. I was a Troop Leader in 'B' Squadron (S/L Major John Ogier) and Sgt Curd was in charge of the mechanical side of things and in particular the replacement of knocked out tanks. My massive command was 3 Shermans and I had 3 knocked out, which you may consider careless. My recollection is that Sgt Curd would get replacements up without delay so that there was no chance of any R&R. He was super efficient and if I am not wrong was rightly decorated for his work. Will the chap asking for info about a man called Wanless let me have an email address. 'Geordie' wanless was my wireless operator. Richard S J Wallington

I would like to ask anyone if they have any information on My Grandfather. He was Sgt Leslie Richard Bird of the 4th Queen's Own Hussars. Ron if you read this I would very much like to contact you perhaps even meet. I am writing a book on my grandfathers war experience which for the most of it was spent in captivity. He was captured on the 29th of April 1941 along with thousands of others whilst defending the evacuating allied troops from Kalamata. I have details of where he was in captivity and when but is is before hand that I am interested in and up to his capture. I would be grateful if you would contact me or if anyone has any information even remotely connected. It all adds to the pieces of the puzzle. For Cyril Cooper. My father, Francis Edgar NEWMAN was also in the 4th Hussars, captured at Corinth and a POW until 1945. I know there were all too many of them, but cannot help but wonder if they knew each other as their paths seemed to run alongside for so long. I am now kicking myself for not having asked enough questions before he died in 1984. Regards, Richard Newman rfn.56@btinternet.com

As a WW2 British Army uniforms and insignia collector, and especially about the units of the Royal armoured Corps, I found this site very interesting. There are a lot of excellent pictures showing the badges worn on the Battle Dress, a must for people like me. If every Regiment had such a devoted site ... Well done.

My father Alfred MAWBY served with the REME and was attached to the 4th Queens Own Hussars during WW2.He was present at Beni Yousef, through Italy and Austria. He was wounded at some stage and was discharged from the Army in July 46. Sadly he died in 1959 as a result of injuries received during the war. I have several photos some of which match those on your site(the Winston Churchill ones). I would be most grateful if there any of his old friends who remember him could contact me. My email is petermawby@aol.com
